Winter Hikers in Ohio/ODNR

Take A Hike This Winter Through Ohio’s State Parks

Article presented by Kingston National Bank

COLUMBUS, Ohio – From the frozen waterfalls of Hocking Hills to the quiet, snow-covered shoreline of Lake Erie, winter transforms Ohio’s landscapes into some of the year’s most breathtaking scenes. This season, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Parks and Watercraft invites visitors to experience that beauty firsthand during the 2025–2026 Winter Hike Series.

With 48 naturalist-led hikes across Ohio State Parks, this winter’s lineup offers something for every type of explorer, those seeking crisp solitude on wooded trails, wildlife watching along frozen lakes, or a memorable winter outing with family and friends.

“Winter reveals an entirely different side of Ohio’s outdoors,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “These hikes give people the chance to experience our parks in new ways. From quiet trails to striking seasonal scenery, it’s the perfect time to slow down, breathe in the cold air, and reconnect with the natural world.”
ODNR naturalists will guide hikes throughout the winter months, highlighting the sights, sounds, and wildlife that make Ohio’s parks special during the colder season. Whether your goal is to stay active, learn something new, or simply enjoy the view, there’s a hike for you.

Participants in naturalist-led hikes will receive a limited-edition 2025–2026 Winter Hike Series decal (while supplies last) as a keepsake to commemorate their adventure.

To find a hike near you, visit the ODNR events page and select “Winter Hike” under Event Type.

In Central and Southern Ohio, Winter Hikes are planned in Lake Hope near McArthur (January 1st), Shawnee State Park in West Portsmouth (January 1st and 10th), Tar Hollow State Park near Laurelville (January 1st and 10th), Deer Creek State Park west of Williamsport (January 1st and 10th), Logan’s Hocking Hills State Park (January 17th), Chillicothe’s Great Seal State Park (January 24th), Circleville’s A.W. Marion State Park (January 25th), Paint Creek State Park (January 31st), Rocky Fork State Park (February 7th) and Pike Lake State Park (March 14th).

The free OuterSpatial app is another great way to explore Ohio’s trails. Check conditions, view maps, discover points of interest, and create your own winter adventure by joining the Ohio Community within the app. Don’t forget to join the Digital Passport Challenge and check in at each park to earn its unique digital badge.

Ohio’s winter trails are beautiful but can be unpredictable. Hikers are encouraged to:

  • Check the weather and research your route
  • Dress in layers and protect hands, feet, and head
  • Bring water and snacks
  • Share your plans and expected return time with a friend or family member
