Visit renovated canal warehouses built in 1852 on West Water Street with Kevin Coleman: Dard Hunter Studios, and Old Town Fabric Shop.
The sturdy buildings have seen varied uses over the years, and you will hear about their history, architectural and engineering details, and proud renovations.
190 years ago this month, the Ohio & Erie Canal officially opened in Chillicothe after water finally filled “The Great Ditch.” The canal dominated the town for the next generation and operated for 50 years, bringing wealth and culture, and shaping its development – especially after the Great Fire of 1852.
The tour is limited to about 25 participants and reservations are encouraged. It will be $20 for adults, $10 for students, and $30 for families (three or more family members including children). Pay “at the door” with cash or check.
The approximately hour-and-a-half tour starts 2pm Sunday, October 17th, 2021 at Dard Hunter Studios at 115 West Water Street. Parking is welcome at 152 W. Water Street, opposite Park Street. Then we’ll walk to the triple canal warehouses of the Old Town Fabric Shop at 52-54-56 West Water Street.
Since most of the tour is indoors, it will happen regardless of weather. It will be indoors with stairs, ramps and an elevator, and on level sidewalks and street crossings.
