Unbeaten Adena Survives Five-Set Volleyball Thriller at Unioto

(UPDATED) – A typical slugfest against long-time SVC volleyball rivals Adena & Unioto is what a capacity crowd received in Frenchtown Thursday, as the Warriors extended their conference lead to two matches over the Shermans to start round two of conference play in a five-set (25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10) victory.
The win also keeps the state’s top Division 5 Adena club unbeaten at (15-0), as the D-3 Shermans slip to (13-3). All three of Unioto’s losses have been against state top ranked teams, with two losses to the Warriors and one to D-4 power Logan Elm.
Set #1 see-sawed back and forth with both teams getting leads through the mid teens, when Adena pulled away for a 19-15 advantage. Following a Unioto timeout, the Tanks rallied to within 23-20, before the Warriors closed the opening set 25-20.
Set #2 saw Unioto rebound to even the match at (1-1) as they pulled away to big leads of 14-7, 17-10, and 24-18. The Warriors didn’t go quietly, storming back to within 24-22, before the Shermans evened the match with a 25-22 victory.
Set #3 appeared to be a pivotal moment for Unioto, as they came back from a 21-14 deficit for a 25-22 victory for a (2-1) match advantage.
Adena picked up their game in Set #4, taking leads of 11-4 and 16-10. However, trailing 19-15, the Shermans cut the deficit to 23-22 and later 24-23 before Adena evened the match (2-2) with a 25-23 decision.
The Set #5 sprint to 15 points was even at 6-6 when the Warriors darted out to a 10-6 lead behind Katie Burns’ serving. Unioto rallied for a 10-10 score, where Adena called timeout. Out of the respite, the Warriors scored the final five points for the 15-10 deciding match victory.
Official stats for Adena show Katie Burns with 22 kills, 4 serving aces and 8 blocks, and digs 15. Jacey Jones added 12 kills, Peytyn Lemaster 6 kills and 2 blocks, Jacey Smith 6 kills & 42 digs, Caroline Glandon 3 kills, and Adyson Wisecup with 2 kills. Kimmy Dalton had 22 digs and 2 aces, Kortney Sowers had 16 digs and 17 assists, while Allie Bossert had 13 digs/28 assists and 2 aces.
Unioto was led by Charlotte Dennis’ 21 kills and 4 blocks, Zoie Dettwiller 18 kills/4 blocks and 2 aces, Kayla White 7 kills/5 blocks, Kori Grubbs 5 kills, and Ava Patterson with 4 kills. Defensive leaders were Alyssa Stanley with 46 digs, Kiley Puckett 20, and Libby Anderson with 14 digs.
