(McArthur) – Woodland owners and forest enthusiasts united with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry to celebrate the 100th A Day in the Woods event.
More than 150 attendees participated in the event on June 9 at the Vinton Furnace State Forest near McArthur. The event included a brief ceremony hosted by ODNR Division of Forestry Chief Dan Balser and Ohio University Extension Associate Professor and Natural Resources Specialist Dave Apsley.
“The series of A Day in the Woods workshop classes are designed to provide attendees with hands-on activities related to forestry topics,” Chief Balser said. “It’s truly an honor to celebrate the 100th occurrence of the A Day in the Woods event series to educate people in Appalachian Ohio, and throughout the state.”
The A Day in the Woods forestry education series began with a kickoff event on April 14, 2012, at the Vinton Furnace State Forest and has continued as a successful program ever since.
The milestone was commemorated with a proclamation issued by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. See proclamation here.
The ceremony was followed by an afternoon filled with displays, demonstrations, and activities organized and conducted by A Day in the Woods partnering organizations.
A Day in the Woods has been the flagship outreach program for the Ohio Interagency Forestry Team, a group comprised of eight different units of state and federal government involved in active forest management. This collaborative effort provides quality educational programs for woodland owners and enthusiasts in Appalachian Ohio.
Through the first 100 programs, A Day in the Woods has reached more than 5,300 woodland owners and enthusiasts who manage nearly 150,000 acres of woodlands.
