Westfall Survives Late Unioto Rally For SVC Boys Basketball Win

Westfall’s Mustangs proved they are for real in the SVC Boys basketball title chase, getting a big win at Unioto Friday, 65-62, despite a furious Shermans rally in the fourth quarter.
Westfall led by 13 points in third quarter, before Unioto cut it to 35-31, but Westfall built that back to 45-38 at the end of three periods. Westfall biggest lead of 53-38 was at 4:13 to play in the game, but Unioto came back to within 55-50 with 1:52 after a couple of Newt Hoops three point goals.
Westfall went on a run for a 63-56 lead, then New Hoops connected on another trey to make it 63-59 with 15 seconds to go. Unioto got the ball back and Blake Fitch connected on an old-fashion three to cut it to 63-62. After a Unioto foul, Westfall’s Casey Cline connected on two free throws with six seconds to play for a 65-62 lead. Unioto then missed a desperation three at the buzzer, giving Westfall the win and improving to (5-1) in the SVC and (7-4) overall. Unioto falls to (3-3/6-5)

Zane Trace was a 66-32 winner over Southeastern to remain unbeaten in SVC play, one game ahead of both Westfall and Paint Valley. The Bearcats beat Adena 55-49 in overtime. (6-0) Zane Trace closes first round SVC play by hosting (5-1) Paint Valley on Tuesday. Piketon was also a winner over Huntington 62-46.
Saturday features a battle of area power-house teams, with Zane Trace hosting Miami Trace. Both teams have only one overall loss on the season.
