Winter Adventures Await at the Annual Hocking Hills Winter Hike

(Logan) – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources invites you to experience the breathtaking beauty of Hocking Hills State Park during the 59th Annual Hocking Hills Winter Hike. Scheduled for 9am-11am Saturday, January 18, 2025, this cherished tradition offers an unforgettable six-mile journey through one of Ohio’s most scenic winter landscapes.

“Hiking through the Hocking Hills in winter is like stepping into a storybook,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “We are thrilled to welcome visitors to this beloved event that celebrates the magic of the season and the wonders of Ohio’s great outdoors.”

The 59th Annual Hocking Hills Winter Hike is scheduled for Saturday, January 18.

The challenging hike begins at Upper Falls at Old Man’s Cave and winds through trails lined with towering hemlocks, views of frozen waterfalls, and depending on the weather may be dusted with snow. Iconic landmarks like Lower Falls, Cedar Falls, and Ash Cave add to the hike’s allure, each showcasing the serene beauty of winter.

The annual hike will feature stops at landmarks like Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave, and more.

A few special highlights along the way make this event truly memorable. At Cedar Falls, the midway point, hikers can enjoy complimentary bean soup and cornbread, graciously provided by the local Kiwanis Club. Hikers can offer a donation to the club. The hike concludes at Ash Cave, where the Lions Club will greet participants with hot chocolate and doughnuts, a perfect reward for completing the trek.

Participants are encouraged to carpool due to limited parking at the Visitors Center. Overflow parking will be available at Hocking Hills Elementary School, with transportation provided back to the starting point at the hike’s conclusion.

Given the variable winter weather, hikers should dress in layers, cover exposed areas like their heads, necks, and hands, and bring water and snacks. It’s also wise to inform someone of your plans before setting out. ODNR’s website offers a full list of winter trail safety tips for those planning to attend.

This hike is part of ODNR’s Winter Hike Series and participants will receive a limited-edition Winter Hike Series decal upon completing the trek, while supplies last. Looking to explore more winter adventures? Visit the ODNR Events page for additional hikes near you.
