ODNR Unveils Significant Improvements at Tar Hollow State Park

LAURELVILLE, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) today celebrated a major milestone for Tar Hollow State Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the completion of a series of substantial upgrades designed to enhance visitor comfort, safety, and recreation opportunities.
Among the most anticipated upgrades is the addition of full hook-up campsites, giving campers access to upgraded electric, water, and sewer connections. The park also replaced aging sewer and electric systems to improve reliability for years to come. Visitors to Tar Hollow will notice immediate benefits thanks to a comprehensive improvement project that modernized essential infrastructure and added new amenities throughout the park.

“These improvements reflect our commitment to preserving Ohio’s natural spaces while providing visitors with high-quality facilities and experiences,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “Tar Hollow State Park is a destination of choice for outdoor recreation, and these upgrades ensure it remains welcoming, accessible, and enjoyable for all.”
Guests will enjoy added convenience with a brand-new shower and four newly constructed flush restrooms, offering cleaner and more accessible facilities in high-use areas of the park.
Improvements at Tar Hollow State Park include new education center (R), a new playground (L), upgraded, full hook-up campsites and more.
Families will especially appreciate a new playground, designed to provide a safe and engaging space for children to enjoy as part of their outdoor adventure. Additionally, the park now features a new education building, a versatile space that will support programming, community events, and group activities.
To ensure long-term stability and safer travel within the park, ODNR also completed road slip repairs, to address erosion issues that previously affected park roads. Rounding out the improvements is the installation of a new sewer treatment plant, a critical infrastructure upgrade that enhances environmental protection and supports the park’s future growth.
Known for its scenic trails, dense forests, and rich biodiversity, Tar Hollow State Park continues to be a beloved destination for campers, hikers, and families across Ohio. With these upgrades now complete, the park is better equipped than ever to serve its growing number of visitors. Tar Hollow State Park is surrounded by Tar Hollow State Forest, which totals 16,000 acres.
