Ross County Historical Society Announces Full Day of Hands-On History Programming on May 9

Chillicothe, OH — The Ross County Historical Society invites the public to take part in a
full day of engaging, hands-on history experiences on Saturday, May 9, 2026, with two special
programs focused on preservation and archaeology.

Morning Program: Safe Grave Marker Cleaning Instruction
The day begins with a “Do No Harm” Grave Marker Cleaning Workshop from 8:45 a.m. to 12:00 noon
at Greenlawn Cemetery.

This hands-on training will teach participants safe, preservation-minded techniques for cleaning
historic grave markers without causing damage. Instruction will be provided by professionals from
Chillicothe Monument/Hardy Memorial.

Participants are encouraged to bring a small bucket, gloves, a soft brush, and rags. Additional supplies will be available. Pre-registration is required.

Afternoon Program: RCHS Archaeology Day
From 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the public is invited to the Ross County Heritage Center for RCHS
Archaeology Day, an interactive event exploring Ohio’s ancient past.

Visitors of all ages can enjoy:

  • Artifact displays from local collectors and professionals
  • Atlatl throwing demonstrations (weather permitting)
  • A hands-on children’s archaeology dig activity (weather permitting)
  • Museum exhibits focused on Native American history and culture

The event will also feature a special preview station, offering an exclusive first look at an upcoming
exhibit expansion showcasing a significant collection of Indigenous artifacts.

Both programs are open to the public, and families are especially encouraged to attend the
afternoon Archaeology Day activities.
