Tennis: Nibert, Wolfe & Speas Advance to State

Waverly’s Carson Nibert and Logan Elm’s Mason Wolfe and Zach Speas are headed to the State Tennis Tournament following wins in the Southeast District tournament at Ohio University Tuesday.

Nibert (15-1) advanced after wins over Athens’ Emmett Ragg (6-0, 6-2), Jackson’s Christian Burcham (6-1, 6-2) and then defeated Silas Walter-Wilde of Athens in the championship match, (6-3, 6-1). Walter-Wilde reached the final with a marathon semifinal win over Waverly’s Nate Lehew, (6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-4).

The Braves’ Doubles team motored through their competitors, beating the third-seeded team from Athens in the final (6-1, 6-4).

Chillicothe’s Noah Flores lost his opening match in the Central District Division I Singles tournament in Columbus, falling 7-6(3), 6-3 to Olentangy’s Gavin Cheung.

Lancaster’s Doubles team of Christian Uhl and Jayden Stone lost their opening match New Albany’s Tyler Thomas and Brady Kattan 6-0, 6-0.

The State tournament returned to the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason for the Girls tournament last fall. The Boys will take the courts May 28-29.
