Chillicothe’s Branden Maughmer to Finish Career at Morehead State University

Chillicothe alumnus, Branden Maughmer recently committed to Morehead State University to play basketball. Following four years at Cedarville University. Maughmer was granted a fifth year of eligibility.

The three-time NCCAA Men’s Basketball All-American guided the Yellow Jackets to their first-ever NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in 2021-22. Cedarville was 19-13 on the season.

Maughmer turned heads in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Semi-Finals when he stole an in bounds pass for the game-winning basket last March.

Via text with Litter Media, he explained why he’s headed to Morehead State to finish his eligibility. “They were the first school or one of the first schools to actually reach out to me when I entered the transfer portal.  They were high on me and kinda stopped reach outs for a few weeks then ended up bringing me out on a visit and offered and I just talked with my parents and prayed about it and they felt like the best fit for me, basketball wise but also just the people in the program were genuine and it was evident.”

Maughmer will report to the Eagles June 7th. Morehead State is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference and is an NCAA Division I school.

Cedarville’s small-town atmosphere was the perfect fit for the Chillicothe native. “Cedarville helped me become a man and learn things. Both good and bad, on and off the court. With it being a pretty boring and small town all I did was stay in the gym and that lack of things to do close by allowed me to stay in the gym that much more.”

While at Chillicothe, Branden was teammates with his younger brother, Jayvon. The two reunited when the younger Maughmer followed his big brother to Cedarville.

Maughmer average 16.6 points per game last season with 6 rebounds per game and 3.4 assists each time he hit the floor for the Yellow Jackets. During his time at Cedarville, he tallied 1,709 points (15.4 ppg), 531 rebounds (4.8 rpg), 202 steals, 420 assists and shot ,814 percent from the charity stripe.

Another family member took advantage of an extra year of eligibility to enter the transfer portal. Before the 2021-22 season, Maughmer’s cousin, Osh Brown, who following four seasons at Ball State landed with Rutgers. Brown made news last week by signing to play professionally with the St. Louis Surge of the Global Women’s Basketball Association.
