Cincinnati Wyoming Halts Unioto Soccer State Tourney Run

Unioto Boys Soccer saw their state tournament run end Wednesday in the Division 2 State Semis, falling to Cincinnati Wyoming 6-1 at Teays Valley High School. The 2021 Shermans’ became the second in school history to make a soccer tournament dash to the State Final 4.

Unioto had an early chance at getting on the scoreboard at the 38:30 mark of the first half thanks to a free kick, but Wyoming made the save to keep the match scoreless.

From then on, it was pretty much the Cowboys match the rest of the way. Wyoming made it 1-0 at 33:03: of the first half, scoring on a free kick.

At 28:54, Wyoming made it 2-0.

The Shermans were held in check with just two offensive opportunities in the first 20 minutes of the match.

With 15:42 remaining in the first half, Wyoming scores on a throw-in to take a 3-0 lead on Unioto, which remained the score at intermission.

Unioto finally got on the scoreboard at 31:50 of the second half thanks to a penalty kick from River Pettigrew. His kick ricocheted off a Wyoming player for the goal, making it Wyoming 3, Unioto 1.

The Cowboys upped the score to 4-1 at 17:53 in the second half, then at 8:44 scored again for a Wyoming 5-1 lead.

Wyoming added one last goal on a break away with 2:56 to play for the final: Wyoming 6, Unioto 1.

The Shermans’ season closes as SVC, District and Regional Champs with a record of (16-4-2).

In his post-match talk with the team, Hanes said- “You set a standard for soccer at Unioto that is unheard of. You have changed the culture.”

Unioto Coach Brandon Hanes told Litter Media in an interview prior to the regional final, that this would be his final season as head coach, wanting to watch his son Lucas’ last two seasons as a spectator. Hanes was Unioto head coach for five seasons.

Wyoming faces the Bay Village Bay in the state championship at 4pm Saturday at lower.com Field in Columbus.
