Circleville Tigers & Unioto Shermans Claim Girls D-2 Sectional Finals

DII Girls Sectional Finals took place at Zane Trace on Thursday night.

Circleville 47, Vinton County 28

Circleville began the game on a 7-0 run before VC brought the score back to end the quarter at 9-6 in favor of the Tigers.

The second quarter saw the Tigers pulling away with a score of 18-8 with 2:22 left, but the Vikings brought it back once again to end the half at 18-12.

Circleville pulled away yet again in the 3rd quarter, ending it with a score of 34-15. Circleville earned a 47-28 win, improving to (22-0) while the Vikings season came to a close at (10-14).

Maddie Blakeman led Circleville with 17 points with Gabby McConnell 15, and Faith Yancey 11 points.

The Tigers advanced to the District Semi-Final with Athens on Saturday, February 24th with a 12pm tip-off at Southeastern High School. Athens was a 62-52 winner over Waverly Thursday night. Sheridan meets Fairfield Union Saturday at Logan HS and Jackson plays Hillsboro at Chillicothe HS Saturday. Both games begin at 6:15pm with the winners advancing to the second District Semi-Final at Southeastern HS on February 24th at 1:45pm.

Unioto 67, McClain 27

The game was back and forth for the first quarter. McClain lead 7-4 after 4 minutes before Unioto pulled away for a score of 17-9 to end the quarter. 

The second quarter was more defensive, with a score of 22-11 with 4:53 left, before the Tanks stepped on the gas to make it 36-15 at the half.

Unioto continued rolling and had a 30 point lead by the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw a running clock almost immediately, when Unioto extended their lead to 58-23. The final score was 67-27 for a Unioto win. Milee Smith led the Lady Shermans with 19 points.

Unioto coach Jeff Miller said about their win, “Late in the second quarter, you could see the wind coming out of McClain and we were able to make that big run and get away.”

The Shermans (20-3) will face Marietta next Thursday in the 8pm nightcap of a doubleheader at Southeastern High School. Marietta dispatched Logan Elm 51-37 to advance to the District Semi-Final with Unioto. The first game of the twin-bill features top seeded Fairland battling the winner of Warren vs New Lexington. Those two clubs meet Saturday February 17th at Logan HS to determine the opponent for Fairland.
