Eastern Pike Goes to (11-0) with 41-27 Win Over Shadyside

The Eastern Eagles’ history making football season continues following a 41-27 win over the Shadyside Tigers in opening round play of the OHSAA Playoffs.

Eastern Pike scored on their first four possessions and never trailed, although things did get a bit tense late in the fourth quarter, before the Eagles put the game away.

Jace White scored two touchdowns and a two-point conversion catch to earn McDonald’s Player of the Game honors.

Eastern took the opening drive 57 yards in 6 plays, scoring on a 2 yard TD run by Brewer Tomlison at 9:26 of the first quarter. Dylan Morton’s PAT kick made it 7-0. The drive was kept alive by an incredible catch at the 2 yard line by Tucker Leist on 4th and 11.

The Eagles increased their lead to 14-0 at 6:17 of the first quarter, when Morton found Teagan Werner on a 41 yard TD strike to cap-off a 61 yard/5 play drive.

Shadyside got on the scoreboard with 11:54 of the second quarter, when quarterback Ben Wach scored from one yard out, capping an 82 yard/15 play drive. The PAT two-point conversion failed, cutting Eastern’s lead to 14-6.

Eastern drove 47 yards in 6 plays, scoring with 9:06 of the second quarter on a Landyn Reinsmith 4 yard TD run. Morton’s PAT made it 21-6.

The Tigers answered with a 60 yard/9 play drive at 4:40 of the second period on a Karl Tsoras 1 yard run. Nathan Booth grabbed a 2-point PAT pass from Ben Wach to trim the deficit to 21-14.

But, the Eagles had one more score up their sleeve at 2:02 of the second quarter, driving 71 yards in 7 plays. Jace White capped off the drive with a 5 yard TD run, but the PAT kick misfired, leaving the score 27-14.

Eastern’s defense came up big with Werner’s one handed interception in the end zone on Shadyside’s next possession. Werner returned the INT to the Tigers’ 20 yard line, leaving Eastern with a 27-14 lead at halftime.

Eastern took the opening drive of the second half, traveling 72 yards in 3 plays, when White ran 58 yards for another score for the Eagles biggest lead of the game, 33-14.

Shadyside would close the gap on two unanswered scores. A 65 yard/6 play drive at 6:59 of the third quarter cut the margin to 33-21 when Wach ran 36 yards for the TD. The Tigers capitalized on an Eastern fumble, then proceeded to cut the deficit to 33-27 at 5:38 left in regulation, driving 78 yards in plays on a Wach to Dylan Booth 61 yard TD pass for the score.

But the Eagles offense threw on the after-burner for one last score to clinch the win, driving 55 yards in 8 plays, concluding with a 3 yard TD run by Morton at 1:22 to play for the 41-27 final margin.

Eastern amassed 412 total yards with 259 rushing and 153 passing. Shadyside mustered 392 total yards in the loss.
