Fairland Posts Impressive Win Over Unioto In D-2 Girls Regional Semi

The highly touted Division 2 Girls Regional Basketball meeting between (25-0) Fairland and Unioto, turned into a lop-sided victory for the Lady Dragons as they ran away from the Lady Shermans in the second quarter and concluded with a 88-61 decision.

After both teams traded leads early in the first quarter, Unioto surged to their biggest lead at 16-11, and held a slim 17-16 advantage at the end of the quarter. The Lady Shermans stayed close through 21-21 in the second quarter, when Fairland had scoring runs of 8-0 then 9-2 to take a 38-30 halftime lead.

The third quarter is where Fairland went for the kill, starting with two three-point daggers in as many trips down the floor and went on to outscore Unioto 22-13 in the third period for a 63-45 score after three quarters. It got only worse in the fourth period, with Fairland taking as much as a 30 point lead and cruised to the 88-61 final score.

(26-0) Fairland was led by District 13 Player of the Year Tomi Hinkle’s 21 points, followed by Kamryn Barnitz with 18, Bailey Russell 16, and Bree Allen with 13 points.

(25-1) Unioto was led by Milee Smith’s 23 points, all but 5 in the second half. Amelia Uhrig added 10 and Alexis Book with 10 points.

Unioto shot 24/57 for 42%- including 5/14 three pointers. They were also 8/13 at the foul line and committed 16 turnovers.

Fairland shot 30/54 for 56%- including 12/20 from the arc. They also were 17/20 from the foul line and committed 17 turnovers.

Unioto concludes their historical season at (25-1), and championships in the SVC, sectional and district levels. Fairland improves to (26-0) and will play Friday in the regional championship game against Granville, after they thumped John Glenn 42-6.
