One of the most successful high school cross country as well as track & field coaches in southern Ohio, has been named the new head track and cross country coach at the University of Rio Grande. Matt Paxton made that announcement on his social media post, July 7th.

At Unioto, Paxton led 17 Unioto boys track teams to SVC titles, along with 21 cross country titles. Their highest finish at the OHSAA State Meet was runner-up in 2019 and third place in 2021.

Paxton, whose first day at Rio was July 1st, said it was a tough decision to make. “The choice to leave Unioto was one of the hardest choices I’ve had to make in my adult life. The U has supported me as a teacher and supported our program. Matt Thornsberry, our Superintendent, just finished a million dollar project for a new track and we have probably more young talented athletes returning than during any time in our history.”

Paxton says he hopes to build that success at Rio Grande. “I am ready for a new challenge and the University of Rio Grande showed me clearly that they want to build something special from the foundation they already have established. The University has pledged a tremendous level of financial support and they already have a great culture department wise for their athletes. This all adds up to a once in a lifetime opportunity. Knowing coach and having my Masters from Rio also means I personally want to develop THIS program which I truly think is the best option for so many young people here in Southeast Ohio.”

Paxton says Rio offers a great opportunity to work with student athletes over a wide region. “A second part of the reason I made the change is I truly believe we can share what we have to offer and share our gem with those who have not ever seen it!  I want to build this program to the point that we are pulling kids not from the area. Those from places where they don’t know what SE Ohio has to offer.  The University wants us to build our program in such a way that we can have a very large roster that includes people from the area and from other places without robbing Peter to pay Paul so to speak. We can really create an experience that is rich and rewarding for everyone RIGHT HERE!!”

Paxton says they have roster spots open for both cross country and track & field at the University of Rio Grande, and looks forward to seeing their program grow.
