(Lancaster) – The Fairfield County Board of Health named Dr. Mark E. Aebi, the 2023 recipient of the Public Health Guardian Award. The award recognizes an organization, program, or individual that has made a significant contribution to public health in Fairfield County.

A graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, Dr. Aebi completed his residency at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice, certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, and licensed by the Ohio State Medical Board.

Dr. Aebi has been affiliated with the Health District for nearly 30 years, first being named Medical Director of the Lancaster City Health Department in 1995. He maintained that role during the transition to the Fairfield County Health Department in 2002. In 2011 he began serving in a combined role as Medical Director and Health Commissioner until 2021 when he returned to the singular role of Medical Director which he continues to serve in today.

“Dr. Aebi has played a vital role in protecting the community’s health by supporting the Health Department’s vaccination and disease prevention efforts and responding to communicable disease outbreaks in Fairfield County, including the H1N1 and COVID-19 pandemics.” said Joe Ebel, Fairfield County Health Commissioner.

A committed healthcare professional, Dr. Aebi has served Fairfield County families as a family practice physician through his own practice in Lancaster since 1994. He held affiliation with the Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster Public Health Center, and Lancaster-Fairfield Community Hospital throughout his career.

Recently retired from active practice, Dr. Aebi now divides his time between Lancaster and Friendship, Tennessee. He will retire as FCHD’s Medical Director on December 31, 2023.
