(Chillicothe) – Children 6 to 12 years of age are invited to participate in the Ross County Historical Society’s 2023 Summer Children’s Program, Wednesday, July 26th from 9:30am to 12:30pm. The program, titled “Working on the Ohio and Erie Canal,” will take children back in time to experience what life was like during Ohio’s canal era of the early 19th century.

Participants will discover how the canal was built and who built it, plus they will learn the skills of a canal boat captain, a canal boat builder, and a teamster who drove the horses and mules that pulled the boats along the canal. They will also tour the canal exhibit in the museum, make canal related craft items to take home, and participate in popular outdoor children’s games from the period. Refreshments will be provided.

The program will be held on the grounds of the Knoles Log House behind the Ross County Heritage Center at 45 West Fifth Street, Chillicothe.

To register, or for more information, please call 740-772-1936. There is a $10.00 registration fee which includes a year’s membership to the historical society’s Junior Member Program. (Registration is free for current junior members.) The registration deadline is Monday, July 24.

Participation is limited due to space, and pre-registration is required for all who would like to participate. Outdoor activities will be moved indoors in case of rain.
