(Portsmouth) – Shawnee State University has been awarded $550,011 in Choose Ohio First (COF) grants by the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) to support students in critical fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The grant awards are part of a state-wide effort to strengthen the state’s workforce in these career fields.

“These fields are in high demand in our region,” SSU President Jeff Bauer said. “These scholarships will help support future nurses, doctors, healthcare professionals, advanced manufacturing engineers, computer programmers, math and science educators, and more.”

SSU’s grant will provide funding over a five-year period to fund new scholarships for students pursuing a certificate, associate degree, baccalaureate degree, or graduate degree in Allied Health, Computer Engineering Technology, Information Security (Cybersecurity), Nursing, and Occupational Therapy. ODHE is promoting the use of funds to assist students to obtain credentials and certificates in STEM areas. The SSU COF Scholarship program will provide $1,500 to full-tuition awards for selected students.

To qualify, students must be Ohio residents and meet the academic qualifications for merit-based scholarships at SSU. These include a minimum grade point average of 3.2 and an ACT composite score of at least 21. Alternate placement testing is available for adult students. Special consideration will be given to applicants from the five most economically disadvantaged counties in our region – Scioto, Lawrence, Adams, Pike, and Jackson counties.
