Unioto Clinches Share of SVC Volleyball Crown with Sweep of Zane Trace

The Unioto Lady Shermans clinched at least a share of their first SVC volleyball title since 2018, with a straight set win at Zane Trace, Tuesday (25-22, 25-12, 25-16). The championship is the ninth VB crown in school history. One thing in common with the 2018 title is that their coach Jimmy Hutton was coaching at Southeastern, who Unioto shared the championship with that season.
In Tuesday’s title clinch the Lady Shermans took Set #1, but not without a scare. Zane Trace rallied from a 24-15 deficit to pull to within 24-22, before a Jade Stewart kill ended with a Unioto 25-22 victory.
Set #2 saw Zane Trace with an early 3-2 lead, when they lost 5’8 junior Laynie Scott due to an injury. Unioto went on a 5-0 run for a 7-3 lead, then ZT countered with a 2-0 run, cutting the margin to 7-5. Unioto then stormed forward on a 18-7 finish for a 25-12 win for a (2-0) match lead.
Set #3 had Unioto break away from a 5-3 score and built leads of 16-6. Zane Trace got as close as 19-14, but the Lady Shermans pulled away from there for a 25-16 win and the match sweep (3-0).
Unioto was ld by Jade Stewart’s 16 kills. Abbie Marshall added 9 kills, Ella Cutright 8, and Zoie Dettwiller with 7. Morgan Daniels led the defense with 35 digs, Madelyn Wetzel 12 and Megan Miller 11. Wetzel added 27 assists and Alyssa Staley 14.
Unioto Coach Jimmy Hutton says the Lady Shermans have been aiming for this goal for some time. “The girls decided that they wanted to try to win the league since the Gold Volleyball was out of the question and we told them it’s one game at a time if we did beat Zane Trace tonight. We got a tough one against Huntington on Thursday and it’s not gonna be easy. But, this is something the six seniors on the team and everybody else and the coaches want to be a part of a league championship. So with that being said, we’re gonna give it everything we’ve got in Thursday’s match against Huntington.”
Zane Trace’s Alie Dolan led the Lady Pioneers with 10 kills and 11 digs, Kendra Detillion added 9 kills. Hadley Matthews led the deefense with 22 digs.
Unioto goes for the undisputed championship in Thursday’s regular season close against Huntington. Unioto stands one match ahead of second place Adena, who closes at Piketon Thursday following their 25-8, 25-11, 25-7 sweep at Paint Valley on Tuesday.
Unioto improves to (12-1/19-2) and Zane Trace drops to (4-9/8-13).
