(Portsmouth) – Valley High School has captured first place in this year’s South Central Ohio Regional Science Bowl. This is the second time in the last three years that Valley has claimed the title. The regional competition, hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), drew 18 schools and 32 teams from Scioto, Pike, Ross, and Jackson counties. The event was held at Shawnee State University.

DOE created the National Science Bowl in 1991, to encourage students to pursue careers in math and science. More than 344,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl throughout its 34-year history. It is one of the nation’s largest science competitions.

“We are very proud of all of the students. They worked hard to prepare for this year’s competition and have done an outstanding job representing our communities,” Portsmouth Site Lead Jeremy Davis, DOE, said. “A very special congratulations to Valley High School for winning the regional Science Bowl competition! We wish them well as they move forward to Nationals.”

Schools have the option of entering up to three teams into the Science Bowl competition. Minford’s team 2 came in second place and Valley’s team one along with Northwest’s team 2 made it to the semi-finals.

“We are very excited about winning this year’s competition,” Valley Coach Justin Howard said. “We had a lot of fun competing. We are so proud of our teams for their hard work and we are looking forward to doing our best in the next round as we represent our region.”

More than 60 volunteers from DOE, Fluor-BWXT, Enterprise Technical Assistance Services and Mid-American Conversion Services, served as moderators, time-keepers, rules judges and runners for the event.

“Because of the teamwork we had, this event ran like clockwork,” said FBP Deputy Site Director, Kliss McNeel. “We have an amazing group at the site and it is extraordinary what we do when we pull together for our community.”

This is DOE’s 12th year to host the regional competition. With the win, the Valley Indians will represent their region in the National Finals Tournament April 25th-29th, in Washington, DC.
