Washington Beats Vinton County in D-2 Non Conference Battle

Two Division 2 boys basketball powers battled in non conference action Tuesday, with the (13-2) Washington Blue Lions coming out on top 62-55 over the (14-5) Vinton County Vikings. The WCH victory should play big in the RPI ratings with the boys tournament brackets due out this Sunday.

Washington flew out of the gate for leads of 8-1 and were up 18-9 at the end of the first quarter. Their biggest advantage was 30-14 in the second period, then Vinton County caught fire from three-point range to shave the deficit to 36-32 at halftime. The Blue Lions built their lead to 49-40, only to see the Vikings cut the margin to 49-45 early in the fourth period. Once again, Washington got back up by a margin of 59-50, but VC had one more run to get to within 59-54 before the Blue Lions closed the game out for the 62-55 win.

Washington shot 25/44 from the field- including 3/9 from the arc for 57% and added 9/12 at the charity stripe. Vinton County was 19/46- including 7/12 from the arc for 41%, adding 10/15 at the foul line. Along with strong shooting, Washington was deadly on the glass with a 29-18 rebounding advantage. Both teams committed 14 turnovers.

The Blue Lions duo of Isaiah Haithcock and Garrett Rickman were the Litter Media Radio “McDonald’s Players of the Game”, scoring 20 and 16 points, respectively. John Wall added 14, Gabe Tayese had 6, Noah Haithcock 4 and Will Miller scored 2 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.

Vinton County was led by Garrett Brown’s 20 points, Hayden Reynolds 10, Cobra Sharp 9, Owen Hire 8, Ashton Allman 5 points and 5 rebounds, Ian Mohler 2 points, and Matt Hembree with 1 point.
