Weekend Historical Events In Chillicothe

(Chillicothe) – A couple of events are coming this weekend in Chillicothe, that are likely interests to the historical community.

The 2022 Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Lucy Hayes Heritage Center is 2pm-4pm Saturday, June 25th.  

The brief business meeting at the Lucy House will cover a few annual items for members to vote on, followed by light refreshments – including “Lemonade Lucy’s” drink.  

Historian and tour guide Vice President Kevin Coleman is stepping up as president, and he will speak on the past and future of the Lucy House…the empowered woman it stands for…and how to best fulfill the mission of the birthplace of Chillicothe’s own national First Lady.

Lucy Ware Webb Hayes was the wife of three-term Ohio Governor and 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes.  She was born in Chillicothe in 1831 in the wood frame house, now the “Lucy Hayes Heritage Center,” located at 90 West 6th Street.  

On Sunday, June 26th, join Kevin Coleman on a walking tour of some of its history.  

Meet at the gazebo to walk past and learn about the sulphur well under it, the eagles on the bandstand, the park lake and its outlet through a stone arch, the throwaway glass bottles under the park entrance, the industries that overlooked the former river channel, the famous baseball game at diamond number one, flooded cannons, the story of Memorial Hall & Armory and its monuments, and hints of the Pump House’s watery history.  

Two times on Sunday, June 26th, 2022: a cool morning tour from 9am-11am, and then an afternoon tour to prep you for a downtown dinner from 3pm-5pm.  

$10 for adults, $5 for students, $15 for families (with children).  This is not the big park event by the Chillicothe Restoration Foundation, but a walking tour by Kevin Coleman.
