One of Pike County’s biggest traditional boys basketball rivalries saw the Eastern Eagles get first round bragging rights over Western in their SOC 2 opening game, under the conference’s new three division format. The Eagles never trailed in their 65-41 win at Latham.

Eastern raced out to a 13-0 start, but saw the Indians go on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 13-7 before the Eagles closed the first quarter with an 18-7 advantage.

Eastern held a couple of 14 point leads in the second period and took a 33-21 lead into halftime. Western pulled to within 35-27 early in the third quarter, only to see Eastern’s Jace White hit a three-pointer to give the Eagles a double-digit lead that never dipped under that the rest of the game. Eastern led 51-35 after three then closed out with the 65-41 win.

One of the big factors in the game was Eastern’s dominance on the glass, winning the rebounding battle 40-22. The Eagles also had a whopping 18 offensive rebounds.

While four Eagles had double figures in scoring, three of them had double-doubles. Jace White led the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds, T.J. Richards had 17 points and 10 rebounds to gain our McDonald’s “Player of the Game”. Tucker Leist added 14 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Teagan Werner’s 11 points.

Western was led by Drew Haggy’s 13 points, while Kam Janes added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Eastern shot 26/60 from the field- including 3/9 from the arc for 43%. Western was 18/50- including 2/13 from the arc for 36%. The Eagles were 10/13 at the free throw line and Western 3/8.

Eastern improves to (1-0/5-6) and Western drops to (0-1/4-7) and have lost 7 straight after a (3-0) start.
