Fans who attended the Boys D-III District Semi-Finals at Southeastern High School Saturday got their monies worth.
Top seeded Waverly defeated Warren 61-56 behind Trey Robertson’s 30-points. Robertson is now 23-points away from tallying 2,000 points for his career.
Will Futhey and Mark Stulley combined for another 21 points. Warren’s Trent Taylor paced the Warriors with 18-points followed by Brayden Sallee’s 17 and Dennis Pettey’s 10.
Waverly will battle 12-seeded Jackson this Friday for the District title.
The Ironmen opened an 11-5 lead , but fell behind to Logan Elm thanks to 8 second quarter turnovers. The Braves capitalized and held a 26-25 lead at the break.
The second half, Jackson looked nothing like a team that finished the regular season 11-11. The Ironmen outscored Logan Elm 28-13 behind the efforts of Logan Miller (17-points), Boston Campbell (16 points) and Drew Bragg (13 points).
Logan Elm was led by Braylen Baker’s 14 points, 11 by Tanner Holbert while Garrett Summers and Konnor Starkey had seven each.
The day’s third game was a third time meeting between Frontier Athletic Conference foes, McClain and Washington.
More than 1,700 fans packed Larry Jordan Gymnasium for the bout that featured a shootout between the Tiger’s Bryson Badgley and Washington’s Reico Colter.
The two combined for 73 of the points scored. Badgley sank 34 and crossed the 1,000 point mark in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Colter seemingly couldn’t miss. He had two four-point plays, including a three-plus-one to close out the first period with a 13-13 tie. Colter finished with 39.
It appeared as though McClain was going to pull away with a 22-point second period. But Washington attacked the basket and used pressure to force Tiger turnovers to start the second half. The Lions erased a 9-point deficit at the break and tied the game at 35 just over a minute into the 3rd.
Each time Washington pulled even, McClain managed to separate themselves. Kendyll Toney hit back-to-back baskets to help the Tigers to a 10-point advantage at 51-41 heading into the fourth.
Washington closed the gap to two points late in the game, but hurt themselves with a pair of technical fouls within seconds of each other. McClain’s Braden Wright sank 8-of-10 free throws to secure the 73-70 victory.
Aside from Badgley’s 34 points, Toney finished with 18 points and Wright added 10.
For Washington, Colter’s 39 led the way followed by 14 from Tanner Lemaster and 10 by John Wall.
McClain will face Sheridan, who defeated Gallia Academy 58-48 in the nightcap at Southeastern.
March 4th will feature the District Championship games with a trip to the Convo in Athens for the Regional. Game one features Waverly and Jackson at 6:30pm and McClain vs Sheridan at 9pm.
