Due to the forecasted weather and chilly temperatures on Friday, March 19th, the Buckeye Spring 50 at Atomic Speedway has been rescheduled for Sunday, March 21st, with starting times being moved up one hour earlier.
Sunday’s event at Atomic Speedway, the 7th Annual Buckeye Spring 50, will pay $12,000-to-win and include an $800-to-win event for the Sport Modifieds.
Buy tickets online or at the gate, which opens at 2pm. Pre-sale ordered tickets can get bin at 1:30pm. Hotlaps at 5pm. General admission $30, ages 0-10 are free, seniors/veterans $25. Pit passes ages 0-5 are free, 6-10 $20, 11+ $40.

Some hardware was taken home by several area wrestlers in the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Championships over the weekend.
Teays Valley and Miami Trace each had two athletes in the top 8, with Westfall and Lancaster each having one wrestler on the medal stand.
In Division 1, Teays Valley’s Camden McDanel was state runner-up in the 182 pound division, while Gunner Havens was 8th place in the 106 pound division.
Jacob Reed of Lancaster finished 4th.
In Division 2, Miami Trace had two medal winners. Graham Carson was 5th in the 170 pound division, while Mcale Callahan was 8th in the 152 pound division.
In Division 3, Westfalls Starr Kelly was state runner-up in the 195 pound division.
Vinton County’s trek to the Girls Basketball DII State Championship fell short Saturday, falling to Napoleon 76-44.
Napoleon built a 10-0 lead before the Vikings rallied to close the gap to 12-8 through the first period. The Lady Cats pushed the margin to 11-points by halftime, 31-20.
Napoleon scored a third of their first half points from the charity stripe, hitting 12-of-18 shots. At the intermission, Vinton County missed all seven attempts from beyond the arc while Morgan Bentley and Cameron Zinn combined for 17 of the Vikings’ 20 points.
The Cats found success from inside the paint hitting for more than 60% from the field. Napoleon was paced by Taylor Strock with 23 points. Caely Ressler (18) and Kalli Helberg (16) gave the Cats all they needed to keep Vinton County out of sync.
Napoleon held a 56-31 lead through three quarters.
Bentley led the Vikings with 21 points. Cameron Zinn tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out with 3:26 remaining. Other scorers for Vinton County included Myriah Davis (4), Lydian Nichols (3) and Tegan Bartoe (2).
Vinton County finished its excellent season with a 26-2 mark.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – One year ago this Friday (March 12), the COVID-19 pandemic forced the suspension – and eventual cancellation – of the Ohio High School Athletic Association girls basketball, ice hockey and wrestling state tournaments, along with the boys basketball regional and state tournaments. Those tournaments will not be denied this year, thanks to the dedication of schools to follow local and state health precautions.
State champions will be crowned this week in girls basketball at University of Dayton Arena, ice hockey at the OhioHealth Ice Haus, and wrestling at three sites, as Hilliard Darby will host Division I, Marengo Highland will host Division II and Marion Harding will host Division III. Boys basketball has reached the regional tournaments.

TICKETING: In conjunction with policies set by the University of Dayton and Dayton-Montgomery County Public Health, the OHSAA will make at least 650 tickets available to the fans of each school for their team’s semifinal game in the state tournament. The Athletic Director of each school will distribute the purchase codes for the school’s ticket allotment. Purchase codes are only available through the Athletic Directors of the participating schools or the OHSAA. Ticket allotments for the championship games will also be 650 per school. Tickets for the Division IV and III state semifinals will go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday. Tickets for the Division II and I state semifinals will go on sale at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
LIVE COVERAGE: All 12 games of the state tournament will be covered by Spectrum. The semifinals and finals will be live streamed (free for Spectrum subscribers; $9.99 per game for non-Spectrum customers, at www.ohsaa.tv) and the finals will also be televised live on Spectrum News 1.
“Fairway For Friends” is the name being tagged to a fundraising effort by the First Capital Rotary Club on May 14th at the Chillicothe Jaycees Golf Course.
The 10:00 A.M. event will attempt to raise proceeds for grants to help non-profit organizations in the community.
Dustin Nusbaum of the club says the day will include food, beverages, and skills prizes with the registration fee being $400 per team. There will be a 32-team limit.
Sponsors are also being sought for $100 per hole, along with sponsors for “skins prizes”.

2020-21 has been a historical season for the Shawnee State Bears men’s basketball team and that continued Tuesday with the Bears winning the program’s first Mid-South Conference Championship.
SSU throttled Thomas More 70-54 in the title game, giving the Bears their 22nd straight win and 26th of the season.
Coach DeLano Thomas now has 75 career wins at Shawnee State, with his team’s next stop being the NAIA Opening Round and hopefully the NAIA National Tournament.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine told viewers of his Thursday COVID-19 press conference update that attendance capacities for entertainment events in the state will be allowed to increase.
DeWine said indoor seating capacity will be allowed to expand to 25% of maximum seating capacity and outdoor events will be 30%.
In both cases, fans will still be required to wear masks and maintain social distancing of six feet between “spectator pods” of no more than six people. This applies to concerts and sporting events.
The governor stated that guidelines for fairs, festivals, proms, wedding receptions and parades will be announced soon.
Governor DeWine also said there will be 310,000 first doses of COVID-19 vaccine next week in Ohio. Certain Walmart and Meijer stores will be added as locations along with a number of independent pharmacies. He says vaccinations of school employees have been completed, with Ross County schools included this week.
Despite snow and ice being on the ground in most Ohio communities, Monday, February 22nd represents the start of the Spring Sports season for Ohio High School Athletic Association member schools.
This includes, baseball, softball, lacrosse and track and field. Boys tennis practice then begins March 8th. While regular season contests for lacrosse can begin on March 19th, the other spring sports can begin play on March 27th.
This is a welcome sign for thousands of Ohio high school athletes after their spring sports seasons were cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The OHSAA Board of Directors has approved the tournament regulations in softball, baseball, track & field and boys tennis, with those state tournament venues to be:

(Indianapolis, Indiana) — Religious headwear will now be permitted without state association approval in high school soccer, effective with the 2021-22 season.
This change in Rule 4-2 of the NFHS Soccer Rules Book was recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Soccer Rules Committee at its January 18-20 meeting, which was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The two recommended revisions to Rule 4 were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.
Acting on an earlier recommendation to all sports rules committee by the Board of Directors, the Soccer Rules Committee adopted the following new language for Rule 4-2-10: “Head coverings worn for religious reasons shall not be made of abrasive or hard material and must fit securely.”
Theresia Wynns, NFHS director of sports and officials and liaison to the Soccer Rules Committee, said the new rule will allow student-athletes to express their religious beliefs through the wearing of headwear without the approval of the respective state association.
Language regarding religious headwear was deleted from Rule 4-2-11, which now refers solely to head coverings for medical or cosmetic reasons. Head coverings for these usages still require a physician’s statement before a state association can grant approval.
With many states that play soccer in the fall affected by the pandemic, there were fewer rules proposals this year, so the committee turned much of its discussion to points of emphasis for the 2021-22 season. Eight states that normally conduct boys soccer in the fall were unable to play due to restrictions from COVID-19, and 18 other states had to modify their seasons in some way. On the girls side, six states were unable to play in the fall, and 15 states modified seasons.
“In addition to addressing the religious headwear situation, the committee agreed to continue three points of emphasis from last year and approved two new ones for the coming season,” Wynns said. “One of the points we are continuing is to emphasize that high school athletics, and high school soccer, is education-based. Improving skills and winning games is a part of the overall goal; however, the quest to win games, events and championships cannot come at the expense of providing these educational opportunities.”
In addition to this point of emphasis, others being continued from last year are reckless and serious foul play, and properly worn uniforms and marked fields.
The new points of emphasis for 2021-22 are sportsmanship and professional responsibilities for officials.
With regard to sportsmanship, the committee noted that the message of good sportsmanship should be addressed by school administration with their students, coaches, parents and spectators alike, which includes a message that prohibits taunting and the use of profanity during games.

According to the most recent NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey, soccer is the fifth most popular high school sport for boys with 459,077 participants in 12,552 schools nationwide. Soccer is the fourth most popular sport for girls with 394,105 participants in 12,107 schools.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio High School Athletic Association has announced the venues for two upcoming state tournaments. The ice hockey state tournament will be held March 13-14 at the OhioHealth Ice Haus in Columbus, which is attached to Nationwide Arena, while the wrestling state tournament will be split between three Central District high schools, Hilliard Darby (Division I), Marengo Highland (Division II) and Marion Harding (Division III), March 13-14.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Nationwide Arena is not able to host the ice hockey state tournament on the dates scheduled by the OHSAA, and the Schottenstein Center at The Ohio State University is not able to host the wrestling state tournament.
“We want to thank these three member schools for agreeing to host the wrestling state tournament along with everyone associated with the Ice Haus, Nationwide Arena and the Blue Jackets for their work to host the ice hockey state tournament,” said OHSAA Executive Director Doug Ute. “The most important thing we are doing is giving our student-athletes a chance to compete. Our member schools and other tournament sites are to be commended for doing everything they can to provide these opportunities during the pandemic.”
In the coming days, the OHSAA will announce sites for the regional and state basketball tournaments. As previously announced, the swimming and diving state tournament will remain at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton February 24-27, the bowling state tournaments will remain at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl February 26-27 and March 5-6 and the gymnastics state tournament will remain at Hilliard Bradley High School March 5-6.
As in the past, the OHSAA will determine media access for all state tournaments. Each site determines media access for district and regional tournaments. See below for additional details. Credential applications for the state tournaments will be posted next week.
Ticketing information will be sent to member schools as the tournament move forward. The Ohio Department of Health and Governor Mike DeWine ask that only family members attend athletic events at this time, with indoor facility capacity limits set at 15 percent of the capacity or 300 people, whichever is smaller, unless the venue has received a variance to accommodate more spectators.
