Next month, Cribs for Kids is coming to Waverly to meet the needs of young mothers in Pike County needing a safe sleep-space for their babies.

Cribs for Kids is a non-profit organization which provides cribs to babies whose mothers can’t afford them and educate mothers about the dangers of unsafe sleep environments.

The organization was formed in 1998 as a result of the study of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Four years prior, doctors began instructing new mothers to put their babies on their backs to sleep. The “Back to Sleep” campaign resulted in a drop in sudden infant death rates of 50 percent in the U.S., but sleep-related deaths remained the number one cause of infant deaths after the first month of age.

Cribs for Kids founder, Judy Bannon discovered of those deaths, most were not found in cribs, but on couches or in chairs or adult beds. The solution was to help provide safe places for those newborns to sleep. READ MORE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF CRIBS FOR KIDS
