Paint Valley High School has a new boys varsity basketball coach in Lakiem Lockery, according to Paint Valley Local School Board Member David Shoemaker. Lockery fills the vacancy left by the resignation of Jason Smith, following the 2022-23 season. Lockery served as Paint Valley’s varsity assistant under Jason Smith last season.

Lockery began his basketball coaching at Waverly junior high more than a decade ago, then became Waverly’s JV boys basketball coach for 8 seasons, before becoming Eastern Pike head coach in 2019. After a couple of seasons with the Eagkes, he rejoined the Waverly staff as an assistant, before moving over to Paint Valley as an assistant coach last season.

The New Jersey native attended Fanwood High School, where he was a standout football and basketball player. He was offered a Division 1 football scholarship at West Virginia University, but gave up the sport due to a foot injury that required surgery. Lockery transferred to the University of Cincinnati where his uncle was playing basketball at that time under Bob Huggins.
