Ross Park District Awarded $2.5 Million For Wetland Restoration Project

Article Presented By Tomlinson Insurance

Christmas came several days early for The Ross County Park District, as they have been approved for a $2.48 million grant for the wetland restoration of the Herron-Downs Fen Nature Preserve.

Park District Director Joe Letsche made that announcement through his Ross Parks Facebook post.

In that post, Letsche announced:

“It’s a bit complicated, so I’ll summarize with the short version… The Ross County Park District has been approved for a $2.48 MILLION dollar grant (YES…$2.48 MILLION) through the Ohio EPA for wetland restoration at our new 179 acre Herron-Downs Fen Nature Preserve (Near Kinnikinnick in Green Township). We’ll be restoring wetlands, replanting native forest and marshland, and repairing what was once an awesome wetland ecosystem. This is a huge win for water quality, wildlife, and greenspace in Ross County. We’ll build a simple walking trail with boardwalks through the wetlands for everyone to enjoy. No match money is required from local funds.”

Letsche’s social media post continued with praise for the Park District staff, who helped put this grant application together: “Who has an awesome staff??? The Ross County Park District. So proud of every staff member and Park Commissioner we have for pulling off feats such as this one.”
