Presented By Hometown-Motors, Inc.

Opening Day for the Scioto Valley Youth League gets underway Saturday, April 17th with a full day of activities on Sullivan Field at Mary Lou Patton Park.

The SVYL is in their 60th year of operation, having started at the Douglas Avenue diamond in 1961, with the late Ruby Jenkins and Zeb Ginther spearheading a group of men in the effort to get the Scioto Valley Youth League started.

Thousands of children have played in the league over the decades, including many who went on to successful college and even professional sports careers along with others that became leaders themselves in area communities.

There are currently 12 organizations at SVYL, each with three teams that represent three age groups, totaling 36 teams and over 400 kids.

Open Day games get underway at 8:30am on April 17th, with six games on the schedule. Open Day ceremonies will take place between games in the middle of the day.

Scioto Valley Youth League spokesperson Eric Beam says they play games six days per week, and typically wrap up their season and tournaments by the end of June, which is the way the league has scheduled games for the past 60 years.

In recent years, youth softball has been added to the SVYL activities at Mary Lou Patton Park, which over the years has also involved youth football and cheerleading.
