(Portsmouth) – Shawnee State University’s Office of the Provost has announced the appointment of Dr. Kimberly Inman as the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences effective Jul. 1, 2023, following a national hiring search. Dr. Inman, who has been with the university for nearly ten years, was previously the Chair of the Department of Natural Sciences and most recently served as the Interim Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences since June 2022.

Dr. Inman received her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Marshall University in 1998 and then completed her Ph.D. in Cellular & Molecular Biology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 2006. She served as a Postdoctoral Scientist at Stowers Institute of Medical Research for seven years and continues much of her developmental biology research with her students at SSU, exploring the effects on chicken embryos of diabetes-induced birth defects, OTC medications on embryonic development, and use of CRISPR-Cas9 techniques to alter gene expression during embryo development.

“One of the most impactful aspects of our Arts & Sciences programs are the supportive interactions that develop between students and faculty,” she said. “In our small classes, students become excited about learning and explore ideas. Faculty actively encourage students to grow and pursue their own goals both inside and outside of the classroom.”

Starting at SSU in 2013 in the Department of Natural Sciences, Dr. Inman was named the Chair of the department beginning in 2018 and was recently promoted to Professor of Biology. On campus, she has been involved in several outreach initiatives with K-12 students for science activities and visits to the SSU Anatomy Lab. She has also served on the university’s Educational Policies & Curriculum Committee, served as the faculty co-chair on the Higher Learning Committee’s Criterion 3 focus group, and serves as a member of the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Transfer Assurance Guide Anatomy & Physiology Faculty Panel.

“Our graduates are creative thinkers and learners with the skills to build our future,” she said. “They truly thrive in their pursuits beyond Shawnee State. I am very excited to work with the faculty and staff at Shawnee State who make such important outcomes their mission.”

The College of Arts & Sciences at SSU is made up of five academic departments – English & Humanities, Fine, Digital & Performing Arts, Mathematical Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences – offering associate, baccalaureate, and graduate level degrees.
