Cincinnati Wyoming Halts Unioto Soccer State Tourney Run

Unioto Boys Soccer saw their state tournament run end Wednesday in the Division 2 State Semis, falling to Cincinnati Wyoming 6-1 at Teays Valley High School. The 2021 Shermans’ became the second in school history to make a soccer tournament dash to the State Final 4.

Unioto had an early chance at getting on the scoreboard at the 38:30 mark of the first half thanks to a free kick, but Wyoming made the save to keep the match scoreless.

From then on, it was pretty much the Cowboys match the rest of the way. Wyoming made it 1-0 at 33:03: of the first half, scoring on a free kick.

At 28:54, Wyoming made it 2-0.

The Shermans were held in check with just two offensive opportunities in the first 20 minutes of the match.

With 15:42 remaining in the first half, Wyoming scores on a throw-in to take a 3-0 lead on Unioto, which remained the score at intermission.

Unioto finally got on the scoreboard at 31:50 of the second half thanks to a penalty kick from River Pettigrew. His kick ricocheted off a Wyoming player for the goal, making it Wyoming 3, Unioto 1.

The Cowboys upped the score to 4-1 at 17:53 in the second half, then at 8:44 scored again for a Wyoming 5-1 lead.

Wyoming added one last goal on a break away with 2:56 to play for the final: Wyoming 6, Unioto 1.

The Shermans’ season closes as SVC, District and Regional Champs with a record of (16-4-2).

In his post-match talk with the team, Hanes said- “You set a standard for soccer at Unioto that is unheard of. You have changed the culture.”

Unioto Coach Brandon Hanes told Litter Media in an interview prior to the regional final, that this would be his final season as head coach, wanting to watch his son Lucas’ last two seasons as a spectator. Hanes was Unioto head coach for five seasons.

Wyoming faces the Bay Village Bay in the state championship at 4pm Saturday at lower.com Field in Columbus.

Unioto Soccer and Cross Country Have Big Days

The Unioto Boys Soccer team will had to the Division 2 State Final Four with a 2-1 win over Athens for the Regional Championship at Zane Trace High School.

Sophomore Lucas Hanes scored both of the Shermans goals in the win, never trailing in the contest.

Goal #1 for Lucas Hanes to put Shermans up 1-0:

Goal #2 for Hanes, making it 2-0 at the time and proved to be the winner in what became a 2-1 final score.

Unioto advances to the State Semis November 10th at 7pm against Cincinnati Wyoming. The match is slated to be played at Teays Valley High School.

In State Cross Country action Saturday, Unioto placed third in Division 2 team standings.

The Shermans’ top finishers were Corey Schobelock 5th (15:46), Gabe Lynch 26th, Markko Turner 39th, Seth Ogan 47th.

Unioto Gearing Up For Regional Boys Soccer Tournament

The Unioto Shermans will head to Cambridge High School Wednesday, November 3rd where they will face Saint Clairsville in the Boys Division 2 Regional Soccer Semis.

Unioto advanced with an overtime 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Marietta for the district championship. A Shermans win would place them in the Elite 8 on Saturday for a trip to the State Final Four.

The Shermans were also SVC regular season champs.
