Unioto Lady Shermans Outrun Marietta in District Semi Victory

In a girls tournament basketball game that resembled a rough-and-tumble track meet in the first half settled down somewhat in the second half as the Lady Shermans of Unioto advanced to the Division 2 District Final with a 54-39 victory Thursday at Southeastern High School’s Larry Jordan Gymnasium.

Both teams combined for a total of 45 three-point shot attempts for the game, but Unioto made the higher percentage to secure the win. Unioto shot 22/51 from the field- including 6/18 from the arc for 43%, while Marietta was 13/51- including 7/27 from the arc for a chilly 25% total. The Lady Shermans added 4/7 from the foul line while the Lady Tigers were 6/10.

Marietta opened with a 10-5 lead, with Unioto going on scoring runs of 5-0 and later 9-0 for a 19-11 lead and never trailed again. Unioto led at the end of each stop: 12-11, 30-16, 37-28, then the final 54-39. Marietta was able to cut a Unioto 34-21 advantage to 34-27 late in the third period, but never got any closer.

The (21-3) Lady Shermans had three players in double figures, led by Milee Smith’s 16 points, 15 from Magnolia Holbert and 10 points and 10 rebounds from Amaris Betts. Litter Media Radio’s “McDonald’s Player of the Game” was Amelia Uhrig as she scored 6 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, but also helped to hold Marietta’s leading scorer, Leigha Lauer, to 15 points. Lauer was held to only 2 points in the first half. Lauer grabbed 13 rebounds. Alyssa Baker added 15 points.

Unioto will face (23-1) Fairland in the district championship at Southeastern HS Wednesday, February 28th at 6:15pm in a rematch of their regional tournament game last season, which the Lady Dragons won.
