Waverly Falls To Gilmour Academy In State Semi

The Waverly Tigers saw their season come to a close Friday in the Division 2 State Semi, falling to Gilmour Academy 58-43.

After falling behind 13-2 to start the game, the Tigers battled back to within 13-9 at the end of the first quarter and later tied the game 20-20, only to see the Lancers close the first half on a 10-0 run for a 30-20 lead at halftime.

That lead grew to 34-20 early third quarter before Waverly ended a 14-0 drought that lasted 7:53 before scoring.

The Tigers battled back to within 41-32 at the end of third quarter when Trey Robertson buried a three with a few seconds to play. 

Robertson connected to start the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 41-34 early fourth quarter, but the Lancers got back to a double digit lead of 50-37 with 3:30 left.

The Tigers were unable to cut the deficit under 10 the rest of the game, ending their season at (23-5).

Brandon Rose led the Lancers with 23 points. Adisa Moulton added 14 and Ryan Mueller with 9.

The Tigers were led by Trey Robertson’s 19 points, Will Futhey with 8, and Braylon Robertson with 5.

Gilmour Academy shot 14/35- including 10/20 from the arc for a total of 49% from the field and 14/24 at the foul line. Waverly shot 17/50- including 5/16 from the arc for only 31%. They were also 4/8 from the charity stripe.

Waverly won the rebounding battle 33-25 and the Lancers had 14 turnovers to Waverly’s 10.

The Lancers improve to (23-5) and advance to play top-ranked (22-4) Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary. SVSM advanced with a 72-47 win over #2 ranked Kettering Alter.
