Waverly High School Dedicates C.D. Hawhee Court at Downtown Gym

Carroll Dwight (C.D. Hawhee) will forever be remembered on the floor of “The House that Hawhee Built”, the Waverly Physical Education Building, also known as the Downtown Gym.

Many of Hawhee’s players gathered for the ceremony Saturday night as the Tigers’ home floor was named “C.D. Hawhee Court.”

Hawhee was the Athletic Director for Waverly High School for his 32 years with the school system. He also was the Head Coach of four varsity sports: Baseball, Basketball, Football and Track & Field, for 19 of those years. He later coached Golf and was the Basketball coach from 1947 to 1979 when he retired.

Bo Arnett, Athletic Director for Waverly High School said the current display on the court is temporary. Once the floor is resurfaced in a few years, a larger display with Hawhee’s name will stretch along the sideline of the court in a future floor design.

According to an article for Waverly’s 2023-24 Winter Sports Program, written by Randy Heath, former Sport Editor for the Waverly News Watchman, Hawhee compiled a record of 1,081 wins, 575 losses and three ties for a .653 winning percentage.

Hawhee’s 1954 Baseball team won the State AA Championship and his 1970 Basketball team reach the State Final Four.

Hawhee was given the Paul Walker Award in 1978 which is given annually to an active Ohio high school basketball coach who has made significant contributions to the sport. At the time of his retirement, Hawhee’s 477 wins had him atop the heap of coaches in the state. Hawhee was posthumously inducted as a member of the initial class to the Waverly High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016.
