2021 “Red, White & Boom” Postponed From July 2nd Date

Presented By McDonald’s, I’m Lovin’ It!

Problems getting a permit approved in time, has caused the Board of Trustees for Columbus’ “Red, White & Boom” to postpone their originally scheduled July 2nd date.

Their website states the following:

Red White & Boom! (RW&B!), a 501 c3 non-profit that has presented RW&B! for 39 years is announcing there will be no Red, White and Boom! on Friday, July 2nd.  After months of working with city leaders through the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic we have received word that this year’s event will not receive permitting by the city of Columbus for the originally scheduled date of Friday, July 2nd.

While disappointed Central Ohioans will not be able to attend the largest fireworks show in the Midwest on its original date, the Board of Trustees for RW&B! has committed to continue working with Mayor Ginther’s office to find an appropriate alternative date, either in late summer or early fall.  The Red, White and Boom! Board of Trustees is made up of leaders from NBC4, G&J Pepsi, Encova Insurance and WNCI.

“Laurel Dawson has been a trusted advisor of mine since I first ran for the U.S. House of Representatives.  She has served my administration exceedingly well as Chief of Staff, and I am grateful that she will be taking on this role,” said Governor Mike DeWine.   “I am equally pleased that Michael Hall has agreed to serve as Chief of Staff.  His in-depth knowledge of our administration will allow for a seamless transition. Michael and Laurel are part of an established senior leadership structure that includes Ann O’Donnell as Chief Advisor, a position she has held since the beginning of our administration.”

Dawson will remain part of the Governor’s senior leadership team in her new role as Counselor to the Governor and will continue to serve as a senior advisor.  Dawson will focus on collaborating with organizations, businesses, and state and local government throughout Ohio to help further key DeWine administration initiatives such as growing Ohio’s economy, enhancing job training efforts, expanding broadband, and H2Ohio. She will continue to help implement Governor DeWine’s vision for the future by harnessing the talent within state government and outside state government, working with businesses and non-profits to drive these projects.

Adena’s New Orthopedic and Spine Institute Construction Still On Schedule

Presented By McDonald’s, I’m Lovin’ It!

(CHILLICOTHE) – Construction on Adena Health System’s new Adena Orthopedic and Spine Institute (AOSI) is on schedule for a planned September opening. In anticipation of its opening, the Health System is releasing four behind-the-scenes videos which offer exclusive glimpses into what patients and visitors can expect from the new facility.

The AOSI will bring several services together under one roof to better serve the needs of patients — including orthopedics, sports medicine, podiatry, physiatry, neurology, interventional pain management, an inpatient unit and a spine center. Constructed adjacent to the hospital on the Adena Regional Medical Center campus, the 111,000-square-foot structure will include clinical space, operating suites, inpatient and outpatient recovery rooms, imaging services, physical therapy capabilities and a three-story attached parking garage.

Leading Adena Bone and Joint into the AOSI is Service Line Medical Director, James Fleming Jr., MD, who has served in an interim capacity since October 2020. Dr. Fleming’s leadership and experience, having been with Adena as a spine surgeon since 2004, will help guide the vision for the new destination facility.

“The new Adena Orthopedic and Spine Institute is going to be a beacon for first-rate, regional care for southern and south-central Ohio,” he said. “We’re aiming for the highest expectation on every level – visually, being patient-centered, and utilizing technology the best ways we can to provide an unparalleled experience for everyone we serve.”

Dr. Fleming explains that while the building and its amenities will be unlike anything currently in the region for patient care in these areas, it will be the skill, professionalism and patient focus of its healthcare providers and staff that will make it truly special. To complement the clinical expertise, a home-like feel is being built into the environment ranging from private inpatient rooms with private bathrooms to a concierge-type level of service for patients and their families designed to have a positive and healing effect on the entire patient experience. All of this leads him to believe that when the AOSI opens, it will mean much more to the providers, staff, patients and visitors than just another physical structure.

To view the behind-the-scenes videos of the Adena Orthopedic and Spine Institute, visit www.Adena.org/AOSI.

Backyard Grilling Safety

Presented By Hometown-Motors, Inc.

(COLUMBUS) — For many, a Memorial Day cookout marks the unofficial start of summer. Ahead of the holiday weekend, state officials ask Ohioans to practice safe grilling and review and understand their insurance coverage as the season begins.

May is among the leading months for home grilling fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Common causes include failing to properly clean the grill, leaks, or breaks, having a flammable object too close to the grill, and unattended cooking. In regard to injuries, children under five accounted for an average of 2,000 or 39%, of contact burns per year.

“I’m sure I can speak for a lot of people when I say I’m looking forward to firing up the grill with family and friends this Memorial Day,” said State Fire Marshal Kevin S. Reardon. “But while cookouts can be a great way to finally celebrate the unofficial start to summer with loved ones, they can also be dangerous if proper precautions aren’t taken.”

The Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of State Fire Marshal offers the following tips to help Ohioans practice safe grilling this Memorial Day and all summer:

  • Only use grills outdoors and keep them at least 10 feet away from the home, away from deck railings, and out from under eaves.
  • When using a propane grill for the first time each year, inspect the gas tank hose for leaks.
  • Clean the grill after each use to remove grease that can start a fire.
  • With a propane grill, always open the lid before lighting it.
  • When using a charcoal grill, only use charcoal starter fluid and never add charcoal fluid or other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • After using a charcoal grill, always place coals in a metal can with a lid once they have cooled.
  • Never leave a grill unattended when lit!
  • Before using a grill, check the connection between the propane tank and the fuel line.
  • Wear well-fitted clothing when barbecuing. Loose articles and flammable material, such as nylon, should be avoided.

This backyard barbeque season, the Ohio Department of Insurance encourages Ohioans to review their policies. Most property insurance policies cover structures and personal possessions damaged or destroyed by a fire, applicable to the terms and limits of the policy. Auto policies may have coverage available should your vehicle get damaged by fire as well. This is important to note, especially for those participating in camping and tailgating.

Consumers should review their deductible and coverage amounts for each policy with an agent to ensure they meet their needs. A health insurance review is also a good idea. Become familiar with your policy’s cost-sharing amounts, urgent and emergency care aspects, and in-network medical providers.

Jobless Claims Drop In Ohio

Presented By Atomic Speedway

(COLUMBUS) — The employment picture appears to be improving according to initial jobless claims for the week ending May 8th, so says the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Their report of 17,474 “initial claims”, which is lower than the just under 20,000 the week before. Ohioans filed 228,061 “continued jobless claims” last week, 548,241 fewer than last year’s high.

National jobless rate dropped to 444,000.

The ODJFS also provided 149,020 Ohioans with Pandemic Unemployment Assistance in the past week.

According to the ODJFS, over the last 61 weeks, it has distributed over $11.6 billion in unemployment compensation payments to more than one million Ohioans.

ODJFS has also issued more than $10.2 billion in PUA payments to more than 1.1 million Ohioans.
