Fairfield County Area Becomes Ohio’s 140th Nature Preserve

Presented By Classic Brands

(Columbus) — Adding to its many protected natural areas across the state, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves has named its 140th State Nature Preserve. Coyote Run will have 230 acres of preserved natural lands in Fairfield County, thanks to conservation enthusiasts and property owners David Hague and Tammy Miller.

“Our state nature preserves are rare gems that allow people to learn and experience our state’s amazing plant and animal variety,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said.  “At Coyote run people have the chance to search for spring peepers or soak in the beauty of giant oak trees – these are the things we want to protect so future generations get a chance to do the same.”

Coyote Run protects amazingly diverse forested wetlands with numerous vernal pools which are so important to amphibians and other wildlife- like the spotted and tiger salamanders, spring peepers, and western chorus frogs. The new preserve also protects upland forest, stream corridor, and wet meadow.

The property owners will manage Coyote Run State Nature Preserve. Access will be limited to guided hikes and permission through Coyote Run, LLC.

The associated costs for the new preserve were covered by Ohio’s Income Tax Refund Donation Program. These donations are important for protection efforts like this one and managing these special places possible. To find out more about this program and the Division, please visit www.ohiodnr.gov.

Dedicating a site as a State Nature Preserve is the highest level of land protection afforded by the State of Ohio. Once public and privately-owned lands are dedicated, the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves works to ensure they are permanently protected, while allowing for education, science, and visitation.

Atomic Speedway Points To 2022 For Exciting New Developments

Presented By Atomic Speedway

*** Updated Monday evening
Atomic Speedway ownership leader Charlie Vest says there are some major announcements coming to enhance their programming schedule for the year 2022.

The track’s new ownership took over in August of 2021, but Vest says some big news is on the horizon for the 2022 season.

Charlie Vest sat down with Litter Media’s Dan Ramey to discuss how the 2021 season went and looking forward to 2022 brings.

The biggest news comes from Charlotte, North Carolina with the release of the 2022 World of Outlaws schedule. In its release Monday evening, the series announced it would be returning to four Ohio tracks, including Atomic Speedway.

“Even more significant, 2022 will be the first time since 2009 that the Series has visited the 3/8-mile track” explained the release. “The World of Outlaws Gumout Series was the first to visit the track in 2001 before the premier Series made its trip to Atomic in 2003.”

Vest would only reveal “fans will want to stay home Memorial Day Weekend” meaning something big was coming to Atomic.

Scioto Downs Planning New Grandstand

Presented By Classic Brands

(Columbus) — Eldorado Gaming Scioto Downs has announced plans to construct a new $20 million trackside grandstand. The new grandstands include stadium seating, and ground-level terrace seating, as well as an open apron area and two VIP suites.

According to Eldorado’s website- “For over six decades, Eldorado Gaming Scioto Downs has hosted countless live races, concerts and events at the track, and the Grandstands are an integral part of the viewing experience for guests,” said Joseph Morris, Senior Vice President of Racing for Caesars Entertainment. “This investment will significantly improve that experience, and we are incredibly excited to debut the all-new Grandstands and welcome our racing fans back to the track.”

At 30,000 square-feet, the new Grandstands will feature 768 stadium seats on the main level, an additional 280 seats on the terrace and an open apron area. The two VIP suites on the top level will accommodate up to 130 guests and offer a variety of food and drink options.

Earlier in 2021, Eldorado Gaming Scioto Downs completed a $600,000 renovation of the racetrack, resulting in a resurfaced track, updated apron concrete, new bath stalls in the paddock, a revamped drivers’ lounge and a refreshed 500-seat clubhouse. The property also created a detention area for the horsemen.

Scioto Downs debuted its Grandstands on Oct. 9, 1959, with more than 7,000 fans in attendance, as part of a $2.5 million construction project. The following year, the clubhouse opened with seating for 500 guests. Before the gaming addition, the Scioto Downs track hosted many events outside of racing, including the High School State Championship Meet, the 2006 Grand National Championship Flat Track Motorcycle Races and various charitable events. From 2013-2016, the Grandstands, patio and apron were home to the Summer Concert Series featuring an array of nationally renowned acts. Beginning in 2017, the Grandstands closed to the public, but racing continued with temporary seating on the apron.
