The future operations of the Chillicothe Veterans Affairs Medical Center will likely see some changes, if Congress and President Biden go along with market assessment recommendations that are expected to be released on March 14th. The Congress and President are expected to make a decision on the recommendations by January 2023.

The VA MISSION Act of 2018 established a market assessment process to help VA’s nationwide “increase Veteran access to care and improve Veteran outcomes.”

Veterans that participated in a virtual town hall meeting Tuesday afternoon through the Chillicothe V.A., learned what many of the proposed recommendations will be.

A Veterans Affairs spokesperson in the town hall stated- “Pending all recommendations are approved, (it would mean the) “closing of this historical campus.”

Among them are:
*All impatient beds, mental health, and half of the Community Living Center (CLC) are slated to move to Dayton’s VAMC. The other half of CLC beds will be moved to a new location in the Circleville area.

*A new building for Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) is proposed for the Chillicothe Campus that provides general care with the new CBOC being realigned under the Columbus VAMC. Under these recommendations, veterans able to travel would be asked to travel to the next closest VAMC to receive treatments as needed. Veterans unable to travel would be permitted at the approval of their Primary Care Managers (PCM) to receive more local specialized health care.

*Should the Chillicothe V.A. Medical Center be closed, they would work with State and Federal officials to determine the future of the grounds.

Litter Media will continue to follow this story as it unfolds, including the historical significance that the Chillicothe Veterans Affairs Medical Center has had upon central and southern Ohio and the Veterans they served.
