Ross NAACP To Host Jubilee Day 2022

Litter Media’s Mike Smith sat down with Ross County NAACP President Adrienne D’Souza Monday to discuss the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday observance, during a Litter Media LIVE Special Edition.

D’Souza says the Ross County NAACP will celebrate Jubilee Day 2022- “Press On, the Struggle Continues” at 4pm Sunday, January 16th at First Baptist Church, located at 65 West Fourth Street ion Chillicothe. Jubilee Day commemorates the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863.

The speaker for this event will be the Reverend Robert Hitchens of Chillicothe, who also serves as Interim Pastor at Trydestone Missionary Baptist Church in Springfield, Ohio.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic, masks are mandatory to attend this event.

COVID Expert Panel To Be Held In Chillicothe

A collaborative event called Community Connection: Confronting COVID, will take place at Ohio University-Chillicothe on Thursday, October 14th.

The 6pm event will be held in the Auditorium at Bennett Hall, and will also be live-streamed.

The panel for this event will be Ross County Health Commissioner, Garrett Guillozet, Dr. Michael E. Jones, D.O. Orthopedic & Neurologist @ Adena, Dr. John Gabis, Medical Director of Community Partnerships @ Adena, & Ross County NAACP Health Chair, Nurse Practitioner, Robin Jones.

The panelist will share information & answer questions.

Pump House Center For The Arts Teams With NAACP For Celebration Of Freedom

Juneteenth (a contraction of June and nineteenth) – also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day – is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States.

Originating in Galveston, Texas, it is now celebrated annually on June 19 throughout the United States, with increasing official recognition.

It is commemorated on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865 announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army General Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas.

VFW & Ross NAACP Scholarship Application Period Still Open

VFW Post 108 and the Ross County NAACP are announcing that the application period for the Alonzo Lenoir Memorial Scholarship is now open until June 14th.

Two scholarships will be awarded to Ross County Graduating Seniors in the amount of $1,500 each.

To be eligible a student must have a family member who is a Veteran or currently in the Armed Forces, including the Reserve & National Guard.  Also, an eligible recipient can be someone who will be a Cadet at a Military school or ROTC program (Excluding High School Junior ROTC).The eligible recipient must have a scholastic achievement of at least a 2.5 grade average or above.

Applications can be picked up at “Lorene’s Store of Everything”, at 131 West Main Street, Chillicothe (740) 773-8016 or you can send an email to rossnaacp@gmail.com & request an application be sent to you.

All applications must be turned in no later than Monday, June 14th, 2021.

NAACP Hosts Information Event To Encourage More African Americans To Get COVID-19 Vaccination

(Chillicothe) — The Ross County NAACP is sponsoring an in-person event called,  “I’ve Got Mine” on Tuesday, April 27th at 7:00 PM at Ohio University Chillicothe’s Shoemaker Center.

The Chapter has partnered with Ross County Health District, Adena Health System and United Way of Ross County to speak and share information with African American Clergy, Minority Business Owners and Community Leaders in Chillicothe/Ross County to begin the much needed steps to get our African American local  population vaccinated.
