Approximately 200 people were in attendance, including 99-year-old World War II Navy Veteran Chester Collins and 90-year-old Korean War Army Vet Richard Buchanan.

Collins told Litter Media’s Mike Smith the ship he served on traveled across the Atlantic 16 times and served in the D-Day Invasion at Normandy Beach. Following the war in Europe, his ship then headed through the Panama Canal and headed to the war in the Pacific, where they participated in the landings off Okinawa.

Buchanan served as an Army medic and was present at the famous Battle of Pork Chop Hill.

Cincinnati Wyoming Halts Unioto Soccer State Tourney Run

Unioto Boys Soccer saw their state tournament run end Wednesday in the Division 2 State Semis, falling to Cincinnati Wyoming 6-1 at Teays Valley High School. The 2021 Shermans’ became the second in school history to make a soccer tournament dash to the State Final 4.

Unioto had an early chance at getting on the scoreboard at the 38:30 mark of the first half thanks to a free kick, but Wyoming made the save to keep the match scoreless.

From then on, it was pretty much the Cowboys match the rest of the way. Wyoming made it 1-0 at 33:03: of the first half, scoring on a free kick.

At 28:54, Wyoming made it 2-0.

The Shermans were held in check with just two offensive opportunities in the first 20 minutes of the match.

With 15:42 remaining in the first half, Wyoming scores on a throw-in to take a 3-0 lead on Unioto, which remained the score at intermission.

Unioto finally got on the scoreboard at 31:50 of the second half thanks to a penalty kick from River Pettigrew. His kick ricocheted off a Wyoming player for the goal, making it Wyoming 3, Unioto 1.

The Cowboys upped the score to 4-1 at 17:53 in the second half, then at 8:44 scored again for a Wyoming 5-1 lead.

Wyoming added one last goal on a break away with 2:56 to play for the final: Wyoming 6, Unioto 1.

The Shermans’ season closes as SVC, District and Regional Champs with a record of (16-4-2).

In his post-match talk with the team, Hanes said- “You set a standard for soccer at Unioto that is unheard of. You have changed the culture.”

Unioto Coach Brandon Hanes told Litter Media in an interview prior to the regional final, that this would be his final season as head coach, wanting to watch his son Lucas’ last two seasons as a spectator. Hanes was Unioto head coach for five seasons.

Wyoming faces the Bay Village Bay in the state championship at 4pm Saturday at lower.com Field in Columbus.

State Champ Fayette County Dragons Honored At Ohio Statehouse

COLUMBUS—State Senator Bob Peterson (R-Washington Court House) today recognized the Fayette County Special Olympics Dragons Flag Football Team on winning the 2021 Division I State Championship.

This year marks their third state championship in a row for the Dragons, who are sponsored by the Fayette County Board of Developmental Disabilities and coached by Tim Stewart.
 
“It is an honor to host the three-time State Champion Dragons at the Ohio Senate today,” said Peterson. “I am proud to have such a diverse group of individuals who worked together with determination to represent the Special Olympics, Fayette County, and all of Senate District 17.”

State Funds To Rio Grande RAPIDS Project

COLUMBUS—State Senator Bob Peterson has announced the approval of more than $228,000 in state funds that will be used to purchase medical training equipment from Radon Medical Imaging Corp., for the RAPIDS project at Rio Grande Community College.

The Regionally Aligned Priorities in Delivering Skills (RAPIDS) program funds initiatives with regional collaboration between businesses and higher education. The goals of the program are to retain and expand existing businesses, attract new enterprises, and further entrepreneurship. 

“Rio Grande is a tremendous provider of high quality education and workforce development opportunities for local students,” said Peterson. “I’m confident this new investment will benefit both the students, and the employers who will eventually hire them.” 

Playground Being Added at Canal Park

(Circleville) — Construction at Canal Park for the new playground has begun.

According to the Pickaway County Park District website, the site prep includes construction of a handicap accessible ramp and earthwork to correct drainage issues. The fill dirt will be arriving this week and the earthwork will begin shortly after.

People are being asked to avoid the main parking lot during construction and do not park in front of the gate as it will be used as an entrance for the equipment.

Patrons are asked to use the Canal Road Pickaway Trailhead parking lot and the South End Towpath Trail Parking lot to access the trails.

Local Engineering Pioneer Passes Away

A Pickaway County resident with area engineering claims to fame, has passed away at age 90.

Carl Peter DeBruin died November 6th.

Born in Wisconsin, Carl came to central Ohio after being stationed at Rickenbacker Air Force Base in Lockbourne, following a tour of duty in Alaska during the Korean War.

Carl was an engineer at Container Corp for several years and also was the lead engineer at Circleville Metalworks and at one point was part of a startup sheet metal shop. He also did work designing and building the Portsmouth nuclear reactor plant and taught air conditioning technicians. Carl has several interesting engineering claims to fame. He invented the black liquor digester paper process. Additionally, he designed the super cheese shredder at Totino’s pizza which literally shreds tons of mozzarella an hour as well as the original equipment to make Totino’s pizza rolls. Carl also designed the updated pan for the giant pumpkin pie for the Circleville Pumpkin Show and helped engineer the Pumpkin water tower.

After retiring from his technical career, he had a second career from 1993 until 2015 in her ceramic shop taking over mold and firing production while Madge taught classes. At one point their shop had over 15,000 different mold designs.

Friends may call from 4pm-7pm Friday November 12th at the Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10am Saturday November 13th, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. 

Student Geology Research Grants Offered Through ODNR

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Geological Survey is accepting applications for the Ohio Geology Student Research Grant program. For a seventh academic year, the program will support graduate and undergraduate students who conduct geologic research in the state.  

The ODNR Division of Geological Survey will award grants of $2,500 to three earth science students at Ohio colleges and universities. Each grantee will be selected based on the quality of their application, the strength of their professor’s letter of recommendation, and the relevancy of their proposed research.

“Small scholarships like these had a big impact on my college experience,” ODNR Division of Geological Survey Chief and State Geologist D. Mark Jones said. “One of the most important things we can do is to continue making these opportunities available. They benefit both students and Ohio citizens.” 

Previous grant recipients have conducted studies that further our understanding of Ohio geology, including mapping of stratigraphy and glacial features, assessing impacts of human activities on soils, and delineating stream patterns, among other projects.  

The deadline for application submission is Friday, Dec. 31. The application and complete submission guidelines can be found on the Division’s website. Candidates must be enrolled in a full-time graduate or undergraduate earth science studies program at an accredited college or university in Ohio for the 2021–2022 year.

All funds raised for the day will go to support the ministries of the FPC Deacons, who seek to serve the needs of the underserved in our community.
