After a season of no softball in 2020, the Lady Mustangs of Westfall are back on top of the Scioto Valley Conference with an undisputed championship, following a 7-1 win at Adena on Wednesday.

The victory concludes the conference season for Westfall, standing at (12-2) to finish one game ahead of Unioto. It is the Lady Mustangs 8th SVC Softball title in school history and their fourth straight.

Adena scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth.

Five Westfall players had multiple hit games, with two hits each coming from Delana Landefeld, Olivia Dumm, Maddie Mullins, Makayla Cook and Madison Kearney. The Lady Mustangs collected a total of 13 base hits.

Teays Valley Grad Sets NCAA Softball Pitching Record

Presented By Hometown-Motors, Inc.

*(UPDATE- Alyssa Rothwell broke the NCAA record with her 33rd save on May 14th)*

A Pickaway County woman who starred in high school softball at Teays Valley High School, has now etched her name into the NCAA Division 1 Softball record books as a pitcher at Ball State University.

Alyssa Rothwell tied the NCAA record for career pitching saves over the weekend, at 32. She tied the record by working three innings in a 17-11 win over Western Michigan University. Rothwell’s 32 career saves ties her with Mississippi State’s Kellie Willkerson (1999-2002) for the NCAA Division 1 career saves record.

Rothwell, who graduated in December 2020, got an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She can possibly break the record in Ball State’s next game on Wednesday.

At Teays Valley, Rothwell played for the Lady Vikings state championship softball team in 2015, hitting the state championship walk-off home run vs Lebanon in 8 innings. She also pitched all 8 innings that day, firing a 1-hit shutout for the pitching victory.

OHSAA Spring Sports Tournament Tickets Available Online

Presented By Atomic Speedway

Now that spring high school sports tournaments are underway, fans are asking whether attendance is open to anyone or whether its limited as it was during the fall and winter seaons.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association reminds everyone that general spectators are now able to attend games, but some distancing guidelines could still be applicable, depending on the confines of the stadium where games are being played.

The U.S. Centers For Disease Control recently announced that masks are no longer needed for those people fully vaccinated, who are outdoors. Only when in very large crowds, would masks be needed.

The OHSAA says all Sectional, District, Regional, and State level tournaments for all Spring Sports will require a ticket for fans to attend the contest.

Tickets can be purchased through the OHSAA website at https://ohsaa.org/tickets. You do not need a code to purchase tickets.

Unioto Boys/Girls Sweep Team Titles At Ross County Track & Field Meet

Presented By McDonald’s, I’m Lovin’ It!

Billed as the “Longest Running Regular Season Track Meet in Ohio”, the 96th Ross County Track and Field Meet had a twist that kept many people wondering until the following morning as to what school won the boys team title.

The company timing and clerking the meet (Chip Timing/Event Management) lost services to their electronic timer for the boys 3200 meter run, plus the heavy downpour of rain at the time of the race caused the numbers to fall off some of the runners, preventing the scoring for that race Tuesday night.

The scoring company’s website showed as late as Wednesday morning that Adena Boys had 104.5 points for first place, Zane Trace with 98 and Unioto with 95, but also no result for the “3200 run”.

Adena Athletic Director Scott Hurtt confirmed to Litter Media Wednesay morning that Unioto boys took 1-2 in that race, passing both Adena and Zane Trace in the standings to give the Shermans the team title. Adena boys finish as runner-up and Zane Trace third in team standings.

Unioto Coach Matt Paxton told Litter Media’s Mike Smith that the top-two finish in the 3200 run gives the Shermans 113 points for the team crown.

Unioto Girls won their meet in “run away” fashion, scoring 168 points, even with the points from their 3200 run and 4×400 relay- yet to be posted.

The Lady Shermans had doubled the second and third place teams point total even without those race event points, with no possibility of being surpassed when they too are added.

At the time of this story posting, Adena Girls appear as the runner-up.

Individual race results and team standings were still incomplete as of the writing of this story (8:50am 5/5/21), but should be updated sometime during the day.

OHSAA Returns To School Membership Dues To Sustain Income Needs

Presented By McDonald’s, I’m Lovin’ It!

(COLUMBUS) – The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors has approved a recommendation from OHSAA Executive Director Doug Ute that membership dues be collected beginning with the 2021-22 school year. The measure, approved by a 9-0 vote by the Board on Monday, means each high school will contribute $50 per OHSAA sanctioned sport in which the school participates.

“First, I want to thank our Board of Directors for unanimously approving my recommendation,” Ute said. “I also have received favorable feedback from the majority of the administrators with whom I have conversed at our member schools. Levying membership dues does not change our mission, which is to serve our member schools and enrich interscholastic opportunities for students.

“We traditionally have relied on tournament ticket sales for about 80 percent of our revenue,” Ute explained. “That financial model has not been sustainable, and the COVID-19 pandemic has certainly not helped. Levying membership dues will give us a steady line of income since many of our other lines are variable, and it will help us build a new, more sustainable revenue model. That model, which will help ensure our long-term sustainability, will be a combination of a wider variety of income streams – including these dues – and continued better management of our expenses.”

Total dues for the 2021-22 school year will range from $300 per school to $1,300, depending on the number of OHSAA-sanctioned sports in which a school is participating. The dues will be reviewed annually by an OHSAA Finance Committee and any modifications will be recommended to the Board by the executive director. In the future, dues will not exceed $100 per sport.

Levying dues means:

·        Member schools will no longer pay any tournament entry fees, bowling lineage fees, golf green fees or wrestling weight management fees. The membership due is all-inclusive.

·        Student scholarships will be reinstated during the 2021-22 school year.

·        Student catastrophic insurance coverage for all student-athletes, cheerleaders, student managers and student athletic trainers during in-season and OHSAA tournament practices and contests will continue to be provided at no cost to member schools.

·        OHSAA will continue to supply all team trophies and/or individual medals for champions, runners-up and other selected place-winners at the district, regional and state level.

·        OHSAA will continue to supply rule books, sport manuals, online rules meeting presentations plus other publications and tournament administrator passes at no cost to member schools.

·        OHSAA will continue to pay high school fees for ArbiterGame accounts.

·        No membership dues will be levied against member 7th-8th grade schools.

“We will continue to be open and transparent with our member schools about our financial situation,” Ute said. “If we are able to adjust dues in the future, we will look to do so. I want to sincerely thank all of our school administrators for their work and efforts in helping to provide participation opportunities for our student-athletes during these uncertain times, and we appreciate the support they have given us in continuing to conduct our tournaments.”

The Board previously was presented information on membership dues during both the regularly scheduled February 18 and April 22 Board of Directors meetings. Ute also hosted in three virtual meetings April 5 and 13 with member school administrators to discuss dues and OHSAA finances in general. In addition, member school administrators recently received the following memo to further explain dues and OHSAA finances: https://ohsaaweb.blob.core.windows.net/files/SchoolResources/2021MembershipDues.pdf
