The Warriors held a commanding 22-17 lead in the opening set, only to see the Blue Devils close on an 8-0 run for a 25-22 win, which might have been the turning point of the match.

Adena seemed rattled in Set #2, getting aced on serve five times and struggled to pass the ball in possession to get an attack going in a 25-16 loss, that never saw Independence trail.

The Warriors appeared to get their confidence back in set #3, taking their biggest lead at 18-10, but once again the Blue Devils battled back to take a lead of 22-20. Adena answered with a 3-0 run for a 23-22 lead, only to see Adena stave off one Independence match-point at 24-23, before eventually putting it away 26-24.

In their come from behind effort, Brock Blanton drew a bases loaded walk to give the Bearcats their first lead of the game at 6-5, then after the Eagles tied the score at 6-6, it was Connor Free’s RBI hit that gave them the lead at 7-6, and what turned out to be the much-needed insurance runs coming around on a two-run single by Beau Blankenship making it 9-6.

That proved to be critical, after Eastern Meigs scored twice in the top of the 7th and had the tying run in scoring position when Parker’s diving catch ended the game.

Adena Powers Past Pioneers for 2020 SVC Football Title

Presented by McDonald’s – I’m Lovin’ It!

After a 10 year absence and finishing second the last two seasons, the Adena Warriors are finally back atop the Scioto Valley Conference.

Adena blanked Zane Trace 46-0 to finish 6-0 in the COVID-19 shortened football season. The Warriors nearly matched their game average of 48 points per game to earn a Gold Ball for the undefeated SVC season.

Preston Sykes had a scoop and score just 11 seconds into the game and tacked on a 56-yard TD pass on the Warriors first offensive play to post an early 16-0 lead.

“I came on a blitz” said Sykes “I didn’t think I was gonna get there – then all of a sudden, linebacker Cole Williams, he smacked a guy and I saw the ball shootin’ out… my eyes got real big. I thought ‘Oh I can scoop this and score on this’.” And like that, it was 8-0 after Sykes scored on a two-point conversion.

After forcing the Pioneers to punt on their next series, Sykes connected with Tate Myers on a 56-yard pass for a touchdown. And like that, the Warriors were ahead 16-0 1:54 into the first quarter.

Cade McWhorter tacked on a 18 yard field goal for a 19-0 lead. Nate Throckmorton punched in a 5-yard run and with just 13 seconds before halftime, Sykes found Logan Bennett on an 8-yard pass to lift the Warriors to a 32-0 lead.

Sykes wasn’t finished, he broke into the open field and sprinted 67-yards for a score. Gabe Stark was on the receiving end of Sykes’ third TD pass to finish the scoring.

“Starting off fast was the key” said Adena’s John Penwell. “It’s a big deal. Especially when you have a team like Zane Trace, who’s talented, young… The ,kids came out and played well. “

Adena was awarded a first round bye for the playoffs and won’t play until they host on October 17th. Zane Trace travels to Coshocton next Friday as the playoff season begins.

Zane Trace Edges Adena 51-48

The third meeting between the Pioneers and Warriors was much closer than the first two. Zane Trace won by margins of 16 and 13 points in their previous matchups in 2019-20.

Adena had taken the first period 12-9 on a drop-in by Cade McKee just before the buzzer. Zane Trace got a hot hand while Adena cooled its shooting in the second quarter as the Pioneers outscored Adena 17-7 to take a 26-19 lead at the half.

It looked like Zane Trace was going to run away with the game in the third, but Adena drained three-pointers on three consecutive possessions and pulled to within 32-30. The Pioneers recovered and extended their lead to 40-30 to close out the period.

In the 4th, Adena stormed back and whittled the lead to 51-48 with an opportunity to tie the game at the end of regulation, but a three-pointer from Logan Bennett missed its mark and Zane Trace grabbed the rebound as time expired.

Nick Nesser led the Pioneers with 17 points ahead of Cam Evans’ 15. Logan Bennett was the game’s top scorer with 19.

Adena closes its season at 16-9 while Zane Trace improves to 21-3.

The win sends Zane Trace to the DIII District Championship game March 6th at 8:15pm with upset minded Ironton. The Tigers were a 56-41 winner over 3rd seeded Eastern Brown Sunday. Ironton trailed 3-0 but went on a 17-0 run and kept Eastern Brown down 10-17 points the rest of the game. Ironton is 13-10 entering Friday’s game. Zane Trace defeated Ironton in the regular season 54-50.
