Scioto Society Close To Halfway Mark In Fund Drive To Recoup Lost Revenue Due To Pandemic

Presented By Hometown-Motors, Inc

The producers of the outdoor drama “Tecumseh!” are almost at the midway point in efforts to raise funds they lost by not having the show in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scioto Society has thus far raised $600,000 of the nearly $1.3 million in lost revenues, according to CEO Brandon Smith.

Smith told Litter Media Monday morning, that tickets are already on sale for the 2021 season, which will run June 17th through September 5th.

The show has already received a variance on crowd size from the Ross County Health District, which is comparable to the 30% maximum crowd capacity size for outdoor entertainment events announced last week by Governor Mike DeWine.

Scioto Society’s lone fundraiser this year will be The Pour House Bourbon Dinner, slated for March 25th. It will include a virtual silent auction. Tickets for this fundraiser are available through the Pour House at Machinery Hall.

June 10th, President/CEO Brandon Smith told viewers on the production’s Facebook Page the plan for raising funds to keep the local non-profit operating through a campaign called “Bundle of Twigs”. Using the premise of the Shawnee Chief’s analogy of “a single twig is easily broken, but a bundle of twigs is strong.” Hence the name of the fundraising campaign.

The Bundle of Twigs Campaign is a way for the community served by the outdoor drama and its many other productions, can help keep the story of Tecumseh alive. Smith says The Scioto Society has teamed with the Chillicothe-Ross Community Foundation with the hope of raising $100,000 by Christmas of 2020. Because The Scioto Society is a 501c3 organization, donations are tax deductible.

In the interview below, Smith visited with Litter Media while breaking the news of the cancellation of what would have been Tecumseh’s 48th season.

In the release, Smith says “we (The Scioto Society) have made the decision to cancel the 2020 season of Tecumseh!. We will make an announcement at a later date on our fall production, but we have every intention of it going on as scheduled.  An announcement was made several days ago that our spring musical production with Brian Clowdus Experiences, The Sound of Music, will be performed in April and May of 2021.”

Smith adds “The situation that we find ourselves in now is unprecedented. I have managed organizations through all kinds of difficult situations, 9/11, Y2K, the swine flu, and more. But none of them were as difficult as this one. These are the hardest decisions that I have ever had to make. These are the hardest decisions I have ever had to ask a board to make. It is gut wrenching, heartbreaking, and frustrating.  But these are the decisions that must be made.”

The release notes “According to Americans for the Arts, Tecumseh! produces over $2.2 million in economic activity outside the gates of the theater every year.”
